Woman trapped in elevator for a month starved to death before found

Two maintenance workers have been charged with the death of a woman whose body was found after she was trapped in an elevator for a month in central China.

Two servicemen were called to an apartment building in Xi’an, China on January 30 to fix a broken elevator. When they discovered the elevator’s cable was broken, the workers reportedly banged on the door.

After hearing no response, the men cut off power to the elevator, reported the BBC.

However, a 43-year-old resident who has only been identified by her surname, Wu, was inside the carriage at the time.

The Chinese New Year holiday delayed work on the elevator, which ended up being stuck between the building’s 10th and 11th floors for a month.

Servicemen who returned to fix the elevator on March 1 discovered the victim’s body inside, along with scratch marks on the wall.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the woman’s hands were also mangled from trying to pry open the doors.

The government said that the maintenance workers, who now face charges of involuntary manslaughter, should have opened the elevator’s doors to see if anyone was inside before cutting off the power.

A month-long wait to fix an elevator is longer than usual, and residents say that the building management has a history of ignoring residents’ complaints about broken facilities.

After the woman’s body was discovered, residents staged a protest against building management, reported the Los Angeles Times.
